Notes:

From the kitchen
  • Use cold milk for the best texture.
  • Add a few ice cubes if you want an extra-chilled shake.
  • If using frozen banana slices, skip the ice since frozen bananas already make the shake thick and cold.

Make it yours
  • Use 3 tablespoons ice cream for a lighter shake.
  • Add 1 extra tablespoon for extra creaminess.
  • Try a drizzle of honey, a pinch of cinnamon, or a spoon of peanut butter for a fun twist.
  • Whole milk gives the creamiest shake, but 2% also works well. You can swap in almond, oat, or lactose-free milk if needed. Texture may vary.

At the table
  • Serve right away while cold and creamy, on its own or alongside breakfast, brunch, or a simple snack plate.

FROM THE PANTRY

Milkshake

WHY WE LOVE IT

The kind of treat that feels special without being complicated.

A LITTLE STORY

In 1922, Ivar “Pop” Coulson, a soda jerk at a Chicago Walgreens, added two scoops of vanilla ice cream to a malted milk drink, creating the modern milkshake. That same year, Stephen Poplawski invented the electric blender specifically for mixing these drinks, allowing for the frothy, aerated texture we know today.

DID YOU KNOW?

In New England, an ice cream–based milkshake is called a “frappe.” In Rhode Island, it’s known as a “cabinet.”

A banana milkshake with honey is often considered a folk hangover remedy because bananas contain potassium and natural sugars.
