Kitchen Tools:
Notes:
- Slightly stale bread works best because it absorbs the egg mixture better without becoming soggy.
- Brioche and challah make especially rich, tender French toast, but French bread, Italian bread, sourdough, or sandwich bread all work well.
- For a richer French-style version:
Replace a few tablespoons of the milk with heavy cream for a more custardy texture. Let the bread soak for about 20–30 seconds before cooking.
- Classic French: Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fresh berries.
- Maple Breakfast: Serve with maple syrup and butter.
- Caramelized Banana: Top with sliced bananas sautéed in butter and brown sugar.
- Serve warm with fresh fruit, maple syrup, or a dusting of powdered sugar. A cup of coffee or tea makes the perfect pairing.
- Prefer savory? Try Savory French Toast.

WHY WE LOVE IT
It is a simple way to use stale bread while creating a satisfying, protein-rich dish.
A LITTLE STORY
In France it is called pain perdu, meaning “lost bread,” referring to the tradition of using stale bread instead of wasting it.
DID YOU KNOW?
In Germany it’s known as Arme Ritter (“Poor Knights”). In Spain a similar dish called torrijas is especially popular during Easter. In the United Kingdom it’s often called eggy bread and is sometimes served savory. In Türkiye, it’s known as yumurtalı ekmek, which simply means egg bread.
