Stacked classic French toast with butter, powdered sugar, raspberries, maple syrup, and gold fork and knife on a neutral plate.

Ingredients:

  • 6 –8 slices bread, or about 10–12 baguette slices
  • 4 eggs
  • ½ cup milk
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp salt
  • 2 tbsp butter, for cooking

Method:

Start Cooking
  • In a bowl, whisk eggs, milk, sugar, vanilla, cinnamon, and salt.
  • Heat butter in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Dip each bread slice into the egg mixture, coating both sides.
  • Cook the soaked bread 2–3 minutes per side until golden brown.
  • Serve warm with your favorite toppings. Bon appétit.

Notes:

From the kitchen
  • Slightly stale bread works best because it absorbs the egg mixture better without becoming soggy.
  • Brioche and challah make especially rich, tender French toast, but French bread, Italian bread, sourdough, or sandwich bread all work well.
  • For a richer French-style version:
Replace a few tablespoons of the milk with heavy cream for a more custardy texture. Let the bread soak for about 20–30 seconds before cooking.

Make it yours
  • Classic French: Dust with powdered sugar and serve with fresh berries.
  • Maple Breakfast: Serve with maple syrup and butter.
  • Caramelized Banana: Top with sliced bananas sautéed in butter and brown sugar.

At the table
  • Serve warm with fresh fruit, maple syrup, or a dusting of powdered sugar. A cup of coffee or tea makes the perfect pairing.
