Chili Cheese Dog

Ingredients:
- ½ lb. ground beef
- 1 cup black beans, drained and rinsed
- 1 tbsp olive oil
- ½ yellow onion, medium, finely chopped
- 2 Roma tomatoes, peeled and diced
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 tsp chili powder
- 1 tsp paprika
- ½ tsp ground cumin
- ½ cup tomato sauce
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 6 beef hot dogs
- 6 hot dog buns
- 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese
- Diced red onion
- Sliced scallions
- Sliced jalapeños
Method:
Start Cooking- Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add the onion and cook for 2 to 3 minutes, until softened.
- Add the diced Roma tomatoes and cook for 3 to 4 minutes, stirring occasionally, until softened.
- Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it into small crumbles, until browned.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds, until fragrant.
- Add the tomato sauce and black beans.
- Season with chili powder, paprika, cumin, salt and black pepper.
- Reduce the heat to low and simmer for 10 to 15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the chili is thick and saucy.
- Meanwhile, boil or grill the hot dogs until heated through.
- Warm or lightly toast the buns.
- Spread the buns with your favorite mustard or mayo, if you like, then place a hot dog in each bun.
- Spoon the chili over the hot dogs and top with shredded cheese.
- Finish with your favorite toppings and serve warm. Bon appétit!
Kitchen Tools:
- Medium saucepan or grill for the hot dogs
Notes:
- Keep the chili thick enough to sit on the hot dogs without running into the bun. If it looks a little loose, simmer it uncovered for a few extra minutes before serving.
- Add the cheese while the chili is still hot so it softens and melts into the topping.
- The chili can be made ahead and reheated gently before serving.
- Turn up the heat with Cholula, red pepper flakes, sliced jalapeños, or a pinch of cayenne.
- You can also swap the cheddar cheese for pepper Jack, sharp cheddar, or your favorite melting cheese.
- Serve these with fries, roasted potatoes, corn on the cob, or a fresh slaw.
- They are great for game day, casual gatherings, or an easy dinner.

Chili Cheese Dog
WHY WE LOVE IT
Messy in the best way. Chili cheese dogs bring together a juicy hot dog, warm chili, melty cheese, and whatever toppings you are craving. They are casual, comforting, and especially good when dinner needs to feel a little more fun.
A LITTLE STORY
After German immigrants brought their sausage traditions to the U.S., hot dogs quickly became part of American street-food culture. Chili soon entered the picture too, especially in places with strong chili and hot-dog traditions, from Texas and its famous “bowl of red” to Chicago, one of America’s historic hot-dog capitals. The exact origin of the chili dog is still debated, which is fitting for a food that has taken on so many regional forms.
DID YOU KNOW?
Different regions have their own versions and names. In Michigan, a hot dog topped with meat sauce, mustard, and onions is famously known as a Coney Dog, while parts of New Jersey and Pennsylvania have their own chili-topped version called a Texas Hot Dog or Texas Wiener.
