Creamy Tomato Parmesan Sauce

Ingredients:
- 2 tbsp olive oil
- 1 onion, small, finely diced
- 3 garlic cloves, minced
- 1 cup tomato sauce
- 1 cup heavy cream
- ½ cup Parmesan cheese, grated
- ½ tsp salt
- ½ tsp black pepper
- Squeeze of lemon juice
Method:
Start Cooking- Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat.
- Add the diced onion and cook for 4–5 minutes until soft and translucent.
- Stir in the garlic and cook for about 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add the tomato sauce and let it simmer for 3–4 minutes to deepen the flavor.
- Pour in the heavy cream and stir until the sauce becomes smooth and evenly pink.
- Add the grated cheese and stir until melted.
- Season with salt and black pepper.
- Finish with a small squeeze of lemon juice to brighten the sauce. Simmer 2–3 minutes until slightly thickened.
- This sauce works well with: baked chicken strips, grilled chicken, pasta, roasted vegetables, rice bowls. Bon appétit.
Notes:
- Use a good-quality tomato sauce for the best flavor.
- Let the sauce simmer a few minutes before adding the cream so the tomato base develops a deeper taste.
- Once the cream and Parmesan are added, keep the heat gentle to prevent the sauce from separating.
- If the sauce becomes too thick, add a splash of pasta water, milk, or broth to loosen it.
- Add a handful of fresh spinach to the sauce during the last minute of cooking and let it wilt.
- Add sautéed mushrooms for an earthy flavor.
- Add chili flakes for a little heat.
- Mix in fresh basil or parsley just before serving.
- Use mozzarella instead of Parmesan for a milder, stretchy sauce.
- For an extra creamy and slightly thicker sauce, stir in 2–3 tablespoons of cream cheese until fully melted.
- Pasta: Toss the sauce with your favorite pasta for a quick creamy tomato pasta.
- Grilled Chicken: Drizzle the sauce over grilled chicken breasts or thighs for a simple, flavorful main dish.
- Chicken: Stir in baked chicken strips for a quick creamy chicken dish and serve with rice, pasta, or crusty bread.
- Chicken & Pasta: Combine sliced baked chicken with pasta and coat everything in the sauce for a hearty one-pan meal.
- A simple green salad, crusty bread, or roasted vegetables on the side helps balance the richness of the creamy sauce.

FROM THE PANTRY
Creamy Tomato Parmesan Sauce
WHY WE LOVE IT
This sauce brings together the richness of cream, the bright acidity of tomato, and the savory depth of Parmesan cheese. The result is a smooth, comforting “pink sauce” that feels both creamy and balanced. It coats pasta beautifully and pairs just as well with chicken or roasted vegetables.
A LITTLE STORY
Creamy tomato sauces are found in many Mediterranean and European kitchens. In Italian cooking, a similar sauce is often called salsa rosa or rose sauce, created by blending tomato with cream to soften the acidity and create a velvety texture. It became popular in home kitchens because it is simple to make yet feels restaurant-worthy.
DID YOU KNOW?
The signature pink color appears naturally when tomato and cream are combined. Parmesan cheese not only adds flavor but also helps the sauce thicken slightly as it melts, giving it a silky texture that clings perfectly to pasta and chicken.
